Testing your honey with humm is easy! In fact it’s so easy you probably won’t need the guide below but we’ve prepared it anyway!

1. Create a humm account

Visit our signup page app.myhumm.co.nz/portal/signup. Enter your details and verify your email address.

2. Order your free testing supplies

As a humm honey testing customer we’ll provide you with free testing supplies! This includes break resistant sample pottles, sample labels and pre-paid courier bags.

To order your testing supplies, login and click on the ‘Order Supplies’ icon located in the left-hand navigation bar. Fill in the form and click ‘submit’. Please allow 1-2 days for your testing supplied to be delivered. NOTE: Testing supplied and pre-paid courier bag use is monitored and are only able to be sent to Gribbles Scientific, Dunedin. Any abuse of testing supplies orders may result in your account being suspended or deleted.

3. Create an order and select your required tests

Create an order

Click on the ‘New Order’ icon in the left-hand navigation. Enter an ‘Order Reference’, this is a name for your order and all samples submitted. Naming of your order is entirely up to you and can be useful when sending multiple samples. A PO Number (Purchase Order) is optional and generally only used by businesses.

Add Samples to your order

Select the quantity of samples you’re sending by using the + and – buttons and then click ‘Add’

Give your samples a name

Name your samples by typing text directly into the ‘sample name’ box. Your sample name should be a reference to either the hive, apiary, batch or drum that the sample was taken from. Naming your samples in this way helps you to track and match results to specific hives or batches in your operation.

Taking a good quality sample is critical to accurate results. Honey should be thoroughly homogenised prior to sampling.

Choose your tests

Drag tests from the Workbench onto each sample. For Tutin and Salmonella a composite testing service is available.

Composite testing is a cost effective way to perform a single test on multiple samples. For example, if you want to test 5 samples for Tutin, instead of assigning a Tutin test to each sample you can select the samples to be composited using the 'Tutin Composite' tool in your Work Bench. Using this tool tells the lab to combine honey from each sample to create a representative composite sample. The composite sample is then tested for tutin using a single test. If the composite sample fails however, each of the samples used in the composite would need to be individually tested to find out which one caused the composite to fail.

4. Label, pack and send your order

Once you’ve submitted your order, you’ll be asked to print your honey sample labels. If you ordered sticker paper with your testing supplies, please load this into your printer (print a test page on normal paper first to make sure you load your label paper the right way up!).

If you don’t have label paper, print your labels on regular paper and include the sheet with your samples in the courier bag.

5. View your results online

Each test has a specified TAT (turnaround time). The TAT is the number of full working days required to complete your test. The TAT for a sample starts once Gribbles have received your samples.

Your results will be online ready for viewing on or before the specified TAT. Depending on the tests you’ve selected.

Pro Tip

If you’ll be sending multiple samples throughout the season you can add commonly assigned tests to your ‘Workbench’. The Workbench is able to store, group and save commonly used tests. When a saved group is opened, tests can quickly be applied to samples.
