Leptosperin
Test Description
New Zealand Mānuka honey contains unique chemical markers that originate from the nectar of the native Mānuka tree (Leptospermum scoparium). The most abundant of these chemical markers is Leptosperin, first discovered in 2014 by Japanese researcher Kato. The unique presence in Mānuka nectar and the stability of this compound make it an ideal marker to identify Mānuka honey for authenticity and labelling purposes. Due to the fact that it is very difficult to synthesise Leptosperin, the presence of this compound (or lack thereof) also has the ability to identify possible cases of honey adulteration.
The Unique Mānuka Factor Honey Association (UMFHA) holds the license in New Zealand for Leptosperin testing. A UMFHA royalty fee is included in all Humm Leptosperin testing, with all fees passed onto the UMFHA in full. Royalty fees are discounted for UMFHA members. If you are a UMFHA member, please ensure your UMFHA member number is supplied to us so that the correct discount is applied to your test price. To arrange this, please contact sales@ecrotek.co.nz and this will be uploaded against your Humm account.
Test Methodology
The Leptosperin concentration in honey is determined by LC-MS/MS analysis following solvent extraction and dilution.
