Salmonella Composite - Standard
Test Description
Salmonella composite testing is a cost-effective way of testing multiple honey samples simultaneously for salmonella. In order to perform a composite test you will need to send individual samples of each honey to be tested. A composite test can be performed on up to 10 samples.
Once received, the lab will take an equal amount of honey from each pottle and combine them into a single sample. Testing is then undertaken on the single combined sample.
If Salmonella is detected the composite sample will fail and testing of each individual sample will need to be completed to identify the source of contamination.
Salmonella causes salmonellosis and is the second most common bacterial cause of foodborne illness in New Zealand. Salmonella live in the gut of many farm animals and can contaminate meat, eggs, poultry, and milk. Other foods like green vegetables, fruit, and honey can become contaminated through contact with wildlife or untreated human and animal waste.
The standard Salmonella test follows the traditional methodology and provides results within 3 days.
