Mānuka 3 in 1

Test Description

Mānuka honey results from bees collecting nectar from the Mānuka tree (Leptospermum scoparium), indigenous to New Zealand. Furthermore, Mānuka pollen and honey derived from it contains anti-bacterial agents that have been demonstrated to battle bacterial infections. Due to this, the production and export of Mānuka honey is a growing industry in New Zealand and is an area of interest for many beekeepers across the country.

The Mānuka honey 3-in-1 test is useful to beekeepers, exporters, and consumers as it provides information about the grade and activity of the honey. Additional information regarding honey ageing and possible heat treatment can be determined from the HMF (5-hydroxymethylfurfural) levels. The 3-in-1 test measures the DHA (dihydroxyacetone), MGO (methylglyoxal), and HMF concentrations in each honey sample at the time of testing. The NPA (non-peroxide activity) is then determined from the MGO concentration by applying a conversion equation provided by the UMF Honey Association. These levels are commonly used to grade Mānuka honey.

It is important to note that levels of all 3 compounds in Mānuka honey are affected by both temperature and time. All Humm 3-in-1 test reports include a free Mānuka forecast which provides information relating to the potential future grade and quality of the honey.

UMFHA license holders are able to request UMF® certificates for their honey by submitting acceptable Mānuka 3-in-1 and Leptosperin test results. If you are a UMFHA licence holder please email your registration number to sales@ecrotek.co.nz and we will ensure this is loaded onto your account.

Test Methodology

DHA, MGO, and HMF concentrations in honeys are analysed by HPLC following solvent extraction and derivatisation. NPA is calculated as a % phenol equivalent from the measured MGO concentration in the honey.
